Tools: Pen on paper, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop
I was hired by a new retail clothing company out of New Mexico called Bisagra to make designs for shirts inspired by Hunter S. Thompson's persona and books. The company is run by an old friend of Thompson's and wanted to make a special collection dedicated to him.
I was asked to make a flower-like design to be printed on fabric for a Hawaiian style-shirt, as well as a design using elements from the first design to be screen printed on a t-shirt (Here).

Initial Sketch
After researching countless images of Hunter S. Thompson ephemera on the internet, I made an initial final sketch in pencil, then I inked part of it with a pen. Since it was going to repeat like a flower, I only drew one-third of it with the intent of repeating it digitally.
Initial Digital Design
I repeated the pattern digitally to resemble a flower, then I added digital styling such as the posterizing and threshold effects in Photoshop.
Digital Design Color
After talking with the printer and the head of the retail company, we decided on four colors plus black and white. I added the pantone color-coated cmyk colors to the black and white design.
Digital Design Pattern
Then I made it into a seamless pattern on Illustrator but it still wasn't quite right....
Digital Design Pattern II
I worked with the creative director and we decided to make them more sporadic with some of them turned, more like flowers and this is the final design we came up with. The shirts are currently in production.
